Gemsmith — the spec

Gemsmith is a marketplace where consumers discover independent local jewellers, browse curated portfolio galleries, and commission or repair custom pieces — all without leaving the platform. It targets freelancers and creators who want bespoke, handcrafted jewellery and who expect the same digital fluency from their jeweller that they bring to their own work.

The core loop

  1. A user opens the map view and searches by location or speciality (e.g. "engagement rings, London").
  2. They tap into a jeweller's profile and scroll their portfolio gallery, noting past commissions and stated specialities.
  3. They save one or more jewellers to a favourites list for comparison.
  4. They submit a quote request with custom specifications: metal, stone, budget, deadline, and reference images.
  5. The jeweller responds via the in-platform messaging thread with a quote and proposed timeline.
  6. Both parties confirm scope; the project milestone tracker activates and surfaces next steps for each side.

v1 scope

Portfolio galleries — Each jeweller profile hosts an image gallery of past work tagged by speciality (rings, chains, repairs, etc.). Lives on the Jeweller Profile screen; jewellers manage it from their Dashboard.

Request-to-quote workflow — A structured form lets users attach reference images, describe specifications, set a budget range, and target a completion date. The completed request lands in the jeweller's Dashboard as an actionable card; the user sees it in their Requests list.

Project timeline and milestone tracking — Once a quote is accepted, a shared milestone board displays agreed stages (design approval, metalwork, stone-setting, delivery). Both parties can mark milestones complete; the other party is notified by email or SMS.

Searchable map of local jewellers — A filterable map pins every active jeweller account by location. Filters include speciality, price range, and availability status. Lives on the Discover screen as the default landing view.

Messaging system — A threaded inbox scoped per project connects user and jeweller from first quote request through to completion. Supports text and file attachments (images, PDFs). Lives on the Messages screen.

Deliberately later

  • Review and rating system with verified purchases — trust signals matter most once there is enough transaction volume to make ratings statistically meaningful; ship it in v2 when repeat users appear.
  • Payment escrow for commissions over threshold — escrow requires payment-provider integration, legal review, and dispute logic; premature complexity for a platform still proving weekly retention.
  • Repair service booking with instant availability — real-time availability syncing demands calendar infrastructure and jeweller onboarding effort that would slow the v1 launch; add it once the core commission loop is validated.
